Salary Cap is 56.8 million

Money: I love it; the players love it; the league loves it.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=282925

Next year's Salary cap max is 56.8 million and the floor is 48 million.

The floor could be high for some teams. cough* Phoenix* cough* However this gives the Oilers a 1.8M breather (from the 55M predicted) considering they have maybe 6-7M overpaid in current assets. Also, the cap could possibly go down next year as this season may be more affected by the recession. So should the Oilers go out and get another inflated contract or do they grind it out and have the space for both a Gagner and Cogliano extension?

Grind it. Fill the goaltending position and get some role players.

If there are impact players that can be acquired at close to market value, then I'm all for it.

For the price that the Sedins are asking for, are they a better deal than Heatley?

The Sedins will be 40 at the end of their requested 12-year, $63 million contracts, whereas Heatley will be 33 at the end of his contract. All 3 players are 28 years old. The Sedins will average 5.25 M/year and Heatley will average 7.5 M/year. So it comes down to term, and price. The Sedins are the better price, but do you want them on your team for the next 12 years?

As for Gaborik, he wants in the same price range as Heatley and Hossa, though all indications are that he's not asking for a contract term as long as the Sedins or Hossa.

In conclusion: I think we should resign Kotalik and perhaps get somebody who can play both on the 3rd line and on the 2nd line. Kind of like Dan Cleary on Detroit, and what the Red Wings call the 6th man of hockey.

I also think Antropov would look good on a line with Penner and Gagner but that would mean Cogliano would be trade bait, and he's got great upside and he's on the last year of a great contract too. Could Cogliano be the "6th man" next season?

That would allow us to put out two scoring lines and a checking line every night along with a 4th line that plays soft minutes with Cogliano "guest appearances" on that line.

Kotalik-Horcoff-Hemsky *Cogliano
Penner-Gagner-Antropov *Cogliano
Moreau-???-Pisani *Cogliano
<-- Cogliano works on and off the top 3 lines like Dan Cleary would

Cogliano-???-Stortini
(Plays soft minutes, or energy situations to maintain momentum, post-PK or post-PP)

What do you think?

I don't really like Antropov as much as you do, I'd rather aim for Stafford or a grittier top 6 player (Knuble as well although older).

Also, even though he's basically Eklund with a job at the Sun, Garroich said Gagne was available.
Philly is in really tight cap space, so if we could move some draft picks+ back, I'd almost prefer him over Heatley. The only thing I'm worried about is his concussion history...and Rod Phillips calling a play that had both Gagner and Gagne on the ice for.

Role players are iffy. Right now the Oilers have too many albeit crappy ones. I'm willing to bet that Betts is an Oiler July 1st (First signing the Oilers make as well). With the lack of Brodziak, Tambo was saying that he's probably gonna toss one of our upcoming guys into the mix (specifically mentioned Brule). So I wouldn't be surprised to see him there. However it could be very possible that Maholtra or Pahlsson could be in the mix as well. I'd rather Maholtra because he's younger, but I doubt Columbus just lets him go.

Heatley/Gagne-Horcoff-Hemsky
Penner-Gagner-Stafford/Knuble
Moreau-Betts/Maholtra-Pisani
Jacques-Brule-Reddox (Young, but a more faster skilled 4th line, but can be a more gritty 4th line with Stortini/MacIntyre)

Grebeshkov-Visnovsky
Smid-Souray
Staois-Zanon/Scuderi/Peckham

Harding
JDD

I won't do the numbers, but it's pretty close to my Jbo/Heatley proposal, minus Jbo.

Supposedly we actually were in talks with Minnesota about Harding. When TSN texted me, I got giddy because I saw Oilers/Minnesota, but then I saw 4th+5th rounder for Brodziak and cried.

I like Knuble too. But he'd be more of a role player at this point of his career, and he won't be doing any heavy lifting anymore.

He got 27 goals. More than anyone on the Oilers last season. He's also one tough customer. I'm not saying we should drop a long term contract on him, but a 2year/5-5.5M contract would be good for me.

lol that "role player" is better at scoring goals than most of the Oilers.

I also wanted to add he's the typical Quinn player.
